Janis at MIS São Paulo, an exhibition built like a mood board, not a timeline

Janis at MIS São Paulo does not feel like a standard walk-through of dates and artifacts. It is built as an immersive experience, designed to move through mood, music, and memory instead of a strict timeline.

The exhibition brings together more than 300 items from the Joplin family archive, many shown in Brazil for the first time. Across more than ten rooms, visitors encounter photographs, manuscripts, costumes, personal objects, and signature pieces including Janis’s round glasses and a Nudie Cohn vest.

The show’s strength is its intimacy. Rather than flattening Janis into the familiar rock-and-roll myth, it presents a fuller portrait: the artist who could take over a stage, and the woman behind the letters, private moments, and personal history.

The São Paulo setting adds another layer. Brazil was part of Janis’s final year, including her time in Rio during Carnival in 1970. That connection gives the MIS presentation extra meaning, making the exhibition feel less like an imported story and more like one with a real link to the country.

Music is also central to the experience. Songs like “Mercedes Benz” and “Me and Bobby McGee” help shape the emotional rhythm of the rooms, turning the exhibition into something closer to a cinematic portrait than a traditional museum display.

Janis is on view at MIS São Paulo, Avenida Europa, 158, Jardim Europa, from April 16 through June 14, 2026. Tickets are available now, with prices listed from R$30 to R$60.
